10 Top Reasons to Come

Talent 2013

Guest Caller: Nils Fredland

Nils Fredland is renowned in the contra community for his knowledge, energy and passion for contra dance. Nils brings multiple talents to his passion for music and dance – he plays trombone, has been an a capella singer, and has co-authored a book on dance. He is one of the contra community’s most sought-after callers. When not on the road, Nils lives in New Hampshire with his wife and two sons.

Guest Band: Elixir

Anna Patton (clarinet, vocals), Ethan Hazzard-Watkins (fiddle), Owen Morrison (guitar, foot percussion), Jesse Readlynn (trumpet, flugelhorn).

Elixir on YouTube

Since 2005, Elixir has inspired contra dancers all over North America. Their infectious energy, driving rhythms and outstanding musicality have been the joyous heart of dances, festivals, workshops and weddings. They play in a multitude of styles – from contra, to squares, to waltzes, to English and swing dances. The Toronto Contra Dance group is very lucky to have snagged this wildly popular band!

Local Caller: Judy Greenhill

Judy Greenhill

Judy Greenhill is a favourite caller for many clubs – both contra and square dance. Judy calls in a style that is welcoming, inspiring and jubilant! She is dedicated to creating an enjoyable, exuberant dance experience for both newcomers and long-time dancers. Originally from Toronto, Judy now calls throughout Canada and the northeastern United States.

Local Band: Relative Harmony Relative Harmony on YouTube

Relative Harmony

Relative Harmony is an aptly-named trio. Not only are they harmoniously-inclined, they are - indeed - relatives!

Playing together since 2002, the band was formed by husband and wife team Rick Avery and Judy Greenhill, and includes son Jonathan (when he’s not drumming for Uncle Heavy’s Pork Chop Revue, a jazz ensemble) and daughter Katie on fiddle. (Katie will not be joining us this weekend.)

View of Toronto

Imagine dancing in an urban village community where everything is on offer on a fresh spring weekend–fabulous bookstores and cafes, fine dining, casual pubs, a full gamut of restaurants specializing in world cuisines, greengrocers, gourmet cheeses, health food stores, chic clothing – and some of the loveliest parks and ravines in North America.

Toronto ... Our famous subway can whisk you to any other part of the city if theatre or movies are what you seek; there's even an Irish session or two around ! If we say any more, we won’t get you to stay indoors dancing !

If you require billeting, please contact Paula Coutinho, at

If you are finding your own accommodation, we recommend that you find a place near public transportation as the dance is a 5 minute walk from Chester Subway station. Our TTC subway system is clean and safe. Look for places that are near a Bloor/Danforth (a continuation of Bloor), or Yonge TTC* Subway stop.
