Use It or Lose It: Dancing Makes You Smarter
by Richard Powers
Frequent dancing apparently makes us smarter. A major study added to the growing evidence that stimulating one's mind can ward off Alzheimer's disease and other dementia, much as physical exercise can keep the body fit. Dancing also increases cognitive acuity at all ages. Dancing provided significantly greater benefits compared with all other activities studied including reading, bicycling, swimming, doing crossword puzzles and playing golf. Full article here. |
Cups, Mugs & Bottles
Toronto Country Dancers ensures that water is readily available for the duration of our events and we serve free cider or juice at the break. Please help us the keep the environmental footprint of our activities to a minimum by bringing your own cup, mug or water bottle. Thank you!
Fragrances
Please be considerate of fellow dancers who may be allergic to fragrances. Refrain from wearing perfumes, scented hand creams, hair products, deodorants, and after-shaves. Your thoughtfulness is appreciated.
Shoe Policy
We are lucky to have this wonderful floor to dance on. Maintaining such a floor is costly, and the administrator of St. Barnabas has asked us to respect their shoe policy, which is that no street shoes may be worn in the dance hall/gym. Please *bring* an extra pair of shoes to the dance to change into .Click here for more details. |

New to Contra Dancing
or to the Toronto Country Dancers ?
Beginners are welcome at all TCD dances - No partner needed. Contra dancing is a walking step so no fancy footwork to be learned. All music is live (jigs & reels). All dances walked through before the dance. Please come for the 7:00 p.m. Basics Class before the dance.
We hold Contra Dances most second, fourth, and fifth Saturdays from September through June. Please check our Schedule for details. This site is updated regularly. For out of town dances, please follow the "Links" link in the left navigation bar.
We dance at St. Barnabas Church Hall on the Danforth. It's across the road from the Carrot Common. From the Chester Subway Station walk westwards along the Danforth then south on Hampton Ave. Follow the path through the playground to the doors at the end of the path.
Its traditional to change partners for each dance, so you will dance with many people during an evening. Dress casually and comfortably in layers. It gets quite warm. All dancers are invited to go out to eat afterwards.
